But for those of you who like getting your hands a little dirty, this week we have a ‘ready for winter’ checklist to help get you started on your fall maintenance…or at least have you schedule an appointment to get these services done! So take a peek below and be sure to stop into Loughead Mercedes-Benz of Danbury this month for all of your fall maintenance needs!
Battery Power:
- Making sure your battery is fresh is important. The experts say you should change your battery every 3 years, though you could get away with 5 depending on how much you drive…If you’re thinking to yourself “I can’t remember the last time I changed my battery,” it might be time to do so.
- Make sure the cables are not loose. With the engine off, see if the cables can slip free from the nodes. Don’t yank, but be firm.
- Check for corrosion, a white powder that forms around the nodes or clamps of your battery. You can clean this off using baking soda, water, and a toothbrush.
Fill your Fluids:
- It might cost you a little bit more but invest in a “winter blend” type of windshield wiper fluid. These tend to have more alcohol in them and less water so the chance of freezing is less.
- If your windshield washer fluid tank hasn’t been flushed in a few years then it could use it! Be sure not to mix colors; most antifreeze is green, blue, or yellow, but be sure not to mix colors.
- Checking your vehicle’s oil is important. If you have not had an oil change in a long time, it might be time for one.
Additional Preventative Measures:
- Buy an emergency kit with cables, a first aid kit, flares, a battery-powered air compressor, and other things that can prevent a minor inconvenience from becoming a major problem.
- Check the clarity of all your lights.
- Keeping the gas tank at half-filled can help prevent a fuel line freeze; so can that fuel-line antifreeze mentioned earlier.
- Tire pressure is important in the snow, be sure that your vehicle’s tires are to the correct PSI.
Tips For Driving In Heavy Rain | Danbury, CT
Have you been to be out adventuring all summer behind the wheel or your Mercedes-Benz? Then this is your reminder to give your Mercedes-Benz some well-deserved TLC by scheduling your Mercedes-Benz certified service appointment now!
Okay, now that we have that covered, this week’s blog is dedicated to safety behind the wheel of your Mercedes-Benz. We all know Mercedes-Benz vehicles have unbelievable power, but safety is our number one priority. With summer quickly coming to an end, we get ready to welcome September and the months ahead. This means we are heading into hurricane season/fall. And even though hurricanes might not affect us up here in Connecticut, that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t get some pretty heavy rainstorms. So take a peek below and learn more about some tips and tricks on driving in heavy rain, so you can keep you and your passengers safer behind the wheel!
Driving in heavy rain:
- Turn your headlights on – the Highway Code says you must use them when visibility is seriously reduced
- Use fog lights if you like, but switch them off when visibility improves.
- Leave twice as much space between you and the car in front – it takes longer to stop in the wet.
- If your steering feels light due to hydroplaning, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.
- If you break down don’t prop the bonnet open while you wait. Rain-soaked electrics can make it harder to start the engine.
Driving during floods and standing water
- Try to avoid standing water if you can.
- Don’t drive into flood water that’s moving or more than 4 inches deep. Let approaching cars pass first if you are unsure of the depth
- Drive slowly and steadily so you don’t make a bow wave.
- Test your brakes as soon as you can afterward. Water can have a damaging effect on brakes, make sure they are working properly before you continue to drive
- Fast-moving water is very powerful: if strong enough your car could be swept away. Find an alternate route if the water is moving too fast to pass-through
Watch out for:
- Look out for slip and trip hazards like curbs under the water.
- Manhole covers can get lifted and moved.
- Water levels can change quickly
So, you’re ready to get out there and start test-driving vehicles? And perhaps a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle has caught your attention so you’re planning on stopping in to see our team to take a test drive. Before you rush on in, we want to go over a few test driving tips that you should know before coming to see our team. Our goal is to help you get the most out of your time with your selected vehicle. So take a look at these tips, put them to good use, and stop by to see our team to take a test drive when you’re ready!
Call Ahead – it’s a great idea to call ahead to either schedule a test drive with our team or to ensure that the vehicle you were hoping to test drive is still available at the dealership.
Before You Drive – before heading out for the test drive, take a few minutes to go over the features on the inside and check out the interior cabin. Having a list of features you were hoping for as a checklist can help greatly here. Take a look under the hood, in the trunk, the backseat – can you picture yourself in this vehicle? The available features are important to understand before moving further in the test drive.
Drive Your Normal Route – most often, people don’t test drive the vehicle on their current route or roads they travel most often. This is important because it can help you get a feel for how the vehicle will perform on your most traveled routes. Be sure to test the brakes and accelerate gently up to speed a few times to test the driveline. We’re testing how the vehicle shifts. Does it feel smooth and natural?
Around The Tires – once you arrive back, be sure to spend some time look at the tires and wheels that are currently on the vehicle. Are the inner and outer sidewalls smooth and free of any damage, scuffed or ripped? Do the tires have good tread or what’s their rating?
