Got Tire Tread? Here’s How To Check | Danbury, CT
Things are getting a little chilly here at Mercedes-Benz of Danbury! But, we still need to prepare our vehicles for whatever we may encounter and one service that is frequently overlooked is the tread on your tires. Don’t worry – we all do it, we’re all guilty of it but this week we want to teach you how to check from the comfort of your very own driveway! So, check that out below and let us know if we can be of assistance to you and your tires!
- 4/32” or deeper = good tread
- 3/32” = replace tires soon
- 2/32” = replace tires now
Okay, but are you supposed to measure that tread? We have you covered there with a few, simple ways to check that treat, and seriously you won’t need anything more than some loose change!
The penny test: Insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down into the tread facing toward you. If you can see all of the head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and it is time to replace your tires.
The quarter test: do the same test with a quarter and if the tread reaches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining. This means that your tires are still in good shape! No need to worry!
No change? No problem! Take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded into the tread of your tires. Bars are located at the bottom of tread grooves in multiple locations; when these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. If you see this, it’s definitely time to replace those tires as soon as possible. So come see our team today!

Checking Oil: How To
- Open the hood. Prop it so it stays open.
- Locate the oil dipstick next to the engine. It should have a yellow handle and/or be labeled.
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe it on a clean cloth or paper towel.
- Dip the stick all the way back in.
- Pull it out again and look at the oil level. If it’s in the middle of the hatched/indicated area, you’re good. More is better, less is okay, but if you’re lower than the recommended amount you’ll need to get your oil topped up and have your system checked for leaks.
- Look at the oil quality and color. If there are a lot of particles or if the oil looks sludgy, you need to get it changed as soon as possible.
- Put the dipstick back in.
- Close your hood.
