Rumor has it that a big snowstorm could be coming our way very soon, which there really is no better time than NOW, to get your Mercedes-Benz into tip-top shape for the winter weather. The MVP of your winter driving performance is your tires. Making sure the tread on your tires is always important, especially during the winter months. If you’re driving on snow, ice, slush, etc, without tread, you’re basically driving with no traction…aka the thing that keeps you from sliding off the road. So, if you haven’t done so, it’s time to check your tire traction. Don’t know much about cars? No problem, we have a super simple way to check your tires and all you need is a penny! Below see how to conduct the penny test, and see if it’s time for new tires. If you find it’s time for new tires, head to our tire shop to find the perfect match for your Mercedes-Benz and schedule a service appointment today at Mercedes-Benz of Wappingers Falls!

The Penny Test

  • The idea of the penny test is to check whether you’ve hit the 2/32” threshold
  • Place a penny between the tread ribs on your tire.
  • Turn the penny so that Lincoln’s head points down into the tread.
  • See if the top of his head disappears between the ribs. If it does, your tread is still above 2/32”
  • If you can see his entire head, it may be time to replace the tire because your tread is no longer deep enough.

Helpful Numbers To Remember:

4/32” or deeper = Good depth

3/32” = Replace tires soon

2/32” or less = Replace tires now
