Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
The Mercedes representative in the supercar market is the SLS AMG. This two-person supercar has standout features that include gull-wing doors and a 563-horsepower, 6.3-liter V-8 engine. Competitors include the Bentley Continental GT and Lamborghini Gallardo.
Introduction
An SLS AMG roadster joins the coupe late in calendar 2011. It has a power soft-top, conventional side doors, Mercedes’ Airscarf system and a removable wind deflector. A blind spot monitoring system is standard, and a three-mode AMG adaptive suspension is optional.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
Mercedes says the design of the SLS AMG is meant to reinterpret the 300 SL, an iconic car most people recognize for its gull-wing doors. It's a design that features a long hood — nearly 6 feet long — and a short rear deck. Exterior features include: Gull-wing doors, 19-inch front wheels, 20-inch rear wheels, and Body and chassis made of aluminum
Powertrains and Performance
A hand-built 6.2-liter V8 cranking out 563 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque comes with every Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. A seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox is the only transmission available, and it features aluminum shift paddles on the steering wheel and a choice of several modes that range from efficiency to high-performance.
Mechanical features include: Standard 6.3-liter V-8 that produces 563 hp and 479 pounds-feet of torque, Dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission, Expected to go from zero to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds, and the coupe's weight is distributed in a 47/53 front-to-rear ratio
Safety
Standard safety equipment includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, side curtain airbags that deploy from the side doors, side-impact airbags integrated into the seats, and knee airbags. As expected, the SLS AMG's brakes are very powerful and the tires deliver very good grip, bringing the car to a stop in just 98 feet from 60 mph with a firm, consistent feel to the brake pedal action that inspires confidence. Such braking performance is truly impressive, given that only a few cars can come to a halt from 60 mph in fewer than 100 feet.
Interior Design and Special Features
The interior is supposed to evoke the feel of an aircraft cockpit, and the numerous buttons on the center console certainly help with that. There is also a lot of metal and long, angular planes to carry over the aircraft theme. Interior features include: Seat backrests made of magnesium, which is lightweight and strong, and an Airscarf system for roadster
